1. What is Market Research?
Definition: The systematic gathering, recording, and analyzing of data about customers, competitors, and markets to inform business decisions. It reduces uncertainty in decision-making.
Role in Business:
- Identify market opportunities and threats
- Understand customer needs, preferences, and behavior
- Evaluate marketing strategies and campaigns
- Monitor competitive landscape
- Test new products and concepts
- Measure customer satisfaction and loyalty

3. Types of Research
Exploratory: Uncover insights, clarify problems. Methods: focus groups, interviews, literature review. Used when problem is poorly understood.
Descriptive: Describe characteristics of a population. Methods: surveys, panels, observation. Answers who, what, when, where, how.
Causal: Establish cause-and-effect relationships. Methods: experiments, A/B testing. Tests if changing X causes change in Y.
4. Primary vs Secondary Research
Primary Research: Data collected specifically for the current research problem. Advantages: specific, timely, proprietary. Disadvantages: expensive, time-consuming.
Secondary Research: Data that already exists. Sources: government statistics, industry reports, academic journals, internal company data. Advantages: inexpensive, quick. Disadvantages: may not fit the problem, outdated, accessible to competitors.
Q1: Why is problem definition the most important step?A well-defined problem focuses research on relevant information. Poor definition leads to wasted resources on irrelevant data and wrong conclusions. Q2: Compare exploratory, descriptive, and causal research.Exploratory: discover insights (how?). Descriptive: describe characteristics (who, what?). Causal: establish cause-effect (why?).
