Learning Objectives

  • Understand the Empathize phase and its importance
  • Apply empathy research methods
  • Develop empathy maps and user personas
  • Week 1: Design thinking overview
  • Curiosity about people

1. The Empathize Phase

Purpose: Understand users' needs, experiences, motivations, and pain points in their context. Not what they SAY they need, but what they DEEPLY need. Mindset: Assume a beginner's mind. Listen without judgment. Observe without interpretation. Seek stories and emotions, not opinions.

2. Empathy Research Methods

Observation: Watch users in their natural environment. Notice what they do, not just what they say. Look for workarounds, frustrations, and delight moments. Interviews: Structured conversations with open-ended questions. Ask "Tell me about a time when..." instead of "Do you like...?" Use the 5 Whys technique to uncover root needs. Immersion: Experience what users experience. Use the product/service yourself in real context. Builds deep empathy. Extreme Users: Interview users at the extremes (power users, non-users, first-timers). They reveal extreme needs that often apply to mainstream users.

3. Empathy Map

Tool to synthesize observations about a user:
ComponentQuestions
SayWhat does the user say? Quotes, opinions
ThinkWhat might the user be thinking? (often different from say)
DoWhat actions does the user take? Behavior
FeelWhat emotions does the user experience?
PainsFears, frustrations, obstacles
GainsDesires, needs, measures of success
Q1: Why is the Empathize phase critical in design thinking?
Without deep empathy, solutions address symptoms rather than root causes. Understanding users' real needs, motivations, and context is essential for creating solutions that actually work. Q2: What is the difference between what users say and what users do?
There's often a gap. Users may say they want features, but observation reveals different actual behavior. Design thinkers rely more on observed behavior than stated preferences. Q3: How do you conduct an empathy interview?
Ask open-ended questions, listen more than talk, ask "why" repeatedly, seek stories ("Tell me about a time when..."), avoid leading questions, capture emotions and body language. Q4: What is an extreme user and why interview them?
Users at the extremes of experience (power users, non-users, first-timers). Their amplified needs reveal insights that apply to mainstream users but are invisible in average users. Q5: What is an empathy map used for?
Synthesize research findings about a user type. Captures what users say, think, do, feel, their pains, and gains. Builds shared understanding in the design team. Join Discord PreviousIntroduction to Design ThinkingNextDefine Phase
