Before any formula
- Population the claim is about.
- Sample actually observed.
- Variable type (nominal / ordinal / interval / ratio).
- Question type (describe vs compare vs chance).

Week 1 — easy: variable scale
Nominal → mode/counts OK, mean nonsense. Ordinal → order OK, equal spacing not automatic. Ratio → ratios and means interpretable when appropriate.
Week 2 — easy: mean vs median
Build a five-point dataset with one extreme value. Report which centre answers “typical” vs “total per person”.
Week 2 — medium: correct a mean
Adjust the total sum when one value changes, then divide by n. Do not patch the old mean by guesswork.
Week 3 — hard: conditional probability
“Given passed” restricts the denominator to passed students only.
P(A|B) = P(A∩B)/P(B) with the right reference group.Week 4 — easy: chart claims
Supported: “Category X had the highest count in this sample.” Unsupported: causation, future prediction, whole-city claims without sampling argument.
Extension week 8 — confidence intervals
Honest wording: the method captures the parameter often in repeated sampling. Avoid “95% chance this interval contains the mean” after data are observed.
